Ruth Hopkins, the author of Misery Merchants, has been investigating prisons for a decade. In 2013, she uncovered the widespread use of electroshocking, forced medication with antipsychotic drugs, lengthy isolation and suspicious deaths of inmates at Mangaung prison. She founded the Private Security Network, a transnational network of journalists investigating the private security sector.
The company controversially continues to bag huge contracts despite dramas and scandals in the correctional facilities it runs in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
